Very many thanks for that Stu, fascinating background as always.

I knew that guano was a major Peruvian export in the past, but never realised exactly how big and what a part it played in the countries development until reading that second link which included all the financial dealings relating to it.

Its the research into bag seals and the history, some times world wide but some local, that makes me prefer them to coins. Likewise with tokens, especially where you can connect them to a local enterprise. Admittedly having said that should I ever find a gold coin I think I might keep it rather than throw it away.

Hello guys.

Can anyone tell me anything about this lead bag seal please?

It has the word 'Smith' written on it. That is all I can make out.

It doesn't strike me as being too old.

Not sure if you can recognise this one Stu,with it being incomplete,it’s one I found a few weeks back. It’s got an interesting design of a figure with sheep? So maybe woollen cloth seal? Malmesbury wilts on the other side and what looks like Stephen Petti?er & sons? around the edge
What sort of date would it be?

Well a bit of Googling revealed this info. Seems they were manufacturing sheep medicine! The logo top left is the same as on the seal

Pretty sure this is a seal but it would be great to find one of the ear studs. Keep your eye's out for one :thumbsup:

I'll have to find one that makes you work next time! I've only found a few and the rest are in poor condition sadly

Give it a good clean, and try proding what looks like the holes with a cocktail stick to confirm if they are or not - do not worry you can not damage something like that!.

My tentative gut feeling is that it could be the leade seal was used to secure electric and gas meters.
