Found today and assume from a dagger.
Couple of inches down in stubble field.
Gave an 85/6 on the 400i,

Measures 49mm x 14mm, curvature height of 15mm.
Handle slot 30mm x 10mm

Lower slot for blade 44mm x 10mm at widest point

Possible crescent shape pattern front and top of arch.

Any further info appreciated, especially the age.

Agree with Fred.. Early medieval/ Saxon. Lovely find, Dave. Just imagine if it could talk. :clapping:

Bet that feels lovely in the hand as it certainly doesn’t look like one of those relatively flimsy post medieval ones. I’d be delighted to find one of those!

After a quick look on the PAS database, I’d agree with the early medieval ID :thumbsup:
Always carefully proof-read what you've typed to see if you've any words out.

Will be interesting to see what date they record mine as.
Iron age has been found in the area but not Saxon, not that means anything.

My initial suspicion was that it was probably Iron Age but it's really difficult to tell from just photos so I kept my options open. Glad that it's now sorted. :thumbsup:

Lovely find indeed Dave! I presume the blade and tang would have rusted away, but it does make me wonder if there is still a pommel to be found lurking out there somewhere...Wishful thinking I know, but would it be nice if you found it....
