when is a hoop not a hoop - when its a bead...?

Evening All,
Dave ( of Dave the Slave fame!) asked a brill question after I found a poss late Bronze Age bead though prob later ( which I posted here) what actually made a bead a bead? It is something I may well discuss in a video out on Sunday (which shows the heroic recovery of said bead! :D)

Anyway Dave's ? got me thinking... I reckon I can just about tell what makes a "bead" esp when I have it in my hand but what technically makes it a bead and not a ring or a hoop?

Any strong opinions 😂 gratefully received and the Hub will obvs get a whopping mention as a result!

They are beads if they are really old. Or venerable, if you will...

Quite often I think that a bead is an obvious ID simply because there isn't any other convincing explanation. :thumbsup:

Not that I've seen or looked at many, but they mostly seem to have a biconical aspect about them, just like yours above :thumbsup:

What defines say an identical bead and ferrule? Just it's original intended purpose of which we will never know! So take a guess and call it whatever you like. :D :thumbsup:

It’s the manufacturing technique.
A hoop or ring is made by either forming the shape or by casting it. So the strap junction rings cast and filed, and jewellery, the section is bent round and joined. Where as a bead was once solid and the hole is mechanically made by removing material. Obviously this theory is for older items. :thumbsup:

Something i have never even thought about before but makes total sense with your explanation.
Never even thought about how a ring is made .
