All of the advice on these pages is good advice. The one thing I would tell everyone new to detecting is to keep all your finds unless it is clearly modern trash like drinks cans, ringpulls etc.
As your knowledge of finds increases over the years you will realise that some of the bits of 'rubbish' that you have stored in that bucket are actually very nice bits of history. I have discovered Viking gaming pieces, medieval buckles and strap ends in my 'rubbish' bucket from years ago. Sites like these are an absolute goldmine and a wealth of information. Its also worth scanning the Portable Antiquities Scheme database regularly as every once a while you will recognise the odd item that you have tucked away.
Finds in the early years.

Totally true. Hence my increasingly (and weighty) "that might be something" collection

I bet we've all thrown things away we shouldn't
Completely agree on putting things in an 'unidentified but might be something' box to go back to. I've found completely unidentifiable bits that later turned out to be the missing piece of a good find too

Yes I really don’t like Roman coins, I’m not joking

Absolutely. I have a wotsit box and have recently worked out what some of then were- part of a sword hanger, knife pommel and a suspension ring.
It's always worth holding on to the 'something' items.

I thought that 'gound vompletely' was Dutch for 'Should have gone to Specsavers'?

Good things come to those who wait.

Lol I typed that on my phone whilst waiting for a concert. I tried to correct it but I couldn’t get a signal. Can’t even blame alcohol at that point either
