This Sunday I had one of the long awaited days in my detecting career. I found my first golden coin, well half of it. At first I thought it was silver but coming back at the car I cleaned up the coin and spotted this golden glance. I had a bit of a difficult time determining what coin it was but have now made a positive identification. It is a hammered golden ducat from 1590-1593 that was struck in Campen (so it actually was struck in my country of origin). I am not 100% sure but cutting the coin in half seems to have happened deliberately. On 1 side I can read "Umbra Alarum" the whole text shoud read "Sub Umbra Alarum Tuarum". On this side there is visible half of the crowned arms of Spain. On the other side I can read "Duca R P Imp Ca", the whole text would have read ""Duca R P Imp Campen Va Ferdi". On this side you should have seen the catholic king and queen. In my case you can only see the queen. The coin would have had a diameter of 2.8 cm and have weighed 3.4 grammes. Obviously mine is reduced to half of that weight. It is bend a bit so I am sure the pictures do not fully appreciate the level of detail on the coin.

Apart from this I found quite a lot in 4 hours. A couple of ardites, a Spanish cob and some more modern coins (in total the haul was 15 coins). Also a part of a silver spoon handle, 3 buckles and a nice religious medallion that dates back to XVI-XVIII.

That looks like a great days detecting, well done on your first gold coin! I have only found one gold coin too and it's also about half a coin, maybe we should form a club.

Congratulations on your first gold coin :clapping: And yes a half on one does count when it’s a hammered gold coin cause they trump modern gold coins by some way, at least in my book.

Looks like you had a very good day. Even if you hadn’t found the gold the rest of your coins would have been a very good days detecting.

Great write up of your day and look forward to reading about your next adventures.
Yes I really don’t like Roman coins, I’m not joking

You didn't coment how blurry and bad is the picture of a gold coin. 😂
